An elementary school teacher 'A' (23) was found to have taken her own life at Seoi Elementary School, located in Seocho-gu, Seoul, on the morning of July 18 KST.
On July 19 KST, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education confirmed that an elementary school teacher had taken her own life inside a school, and that police were currently investigating the case.
On the same day, the Seoul Teacher's Union issued a statement claiming that this young teacher, who began her position as a homeroom teacher for first graders at Seoi Elementary School in March of 2022, suffered power abuse at the hands of parents. According to information collected by the Seoul Teacher's Union, an incident occurred just last week at this school where a first grader used a pencil to cut the forehead of another first grader. Afterward, parents showed up at school and severely admonished 'A', stating that 'A' had "no right to be a teacher".
The Seoul Teacher's Union has requested a proper investigation from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education as well as the Ministry of Education.
When speculations that 'A' had suffered from power abuse of parents became highly publicized in the media, Seoi Elementary School issued a statement requesting that the spread of "unconfirmed rumors" be halted as not to "harm the young students and defame the deceased teacher". However, this statement has further sparked outrage from the public, as various rumors continued to spread that the teacher's suicide was "being covered up by powerful forces behind the scenes".
Meanwhile, members of the Seoi Elementary School community are currently mourning the deceased with commemorative flowers and messages outside of the school's front gate. Some members of the school's parent association, however, have spoken up requesting that the flowers and messages be removed from the school grounds, as "children are going to school and may be traumatized". This position of some parents has further exacerbated the ongoing rumors and speculations that 'A' took her own life due to struggles related to her professional.
