G-Dragon - Heartbreaker
By using a mold of the face of G-Dragon himself, YG Entertainment looked to give fans an art piece - but they actually ended up using it as the canvas! Fans turned the "Heartbreaker" cover into everything from an ice cube tray to "Captain G-Sparrow," making it a memorable collectible to K-pop fans around the world.
2.
f(x) - Pink Tape
Ever the innovators, f(x) presented their "Rum Pum Pum"-featuring "Pink Tape" in the form of a VHS style package! The attention to detail on this one is impressive, and S.M.'s commitment to the retro aesthetic shines even through the font used in the lyric booklet. This wasn't the first of last time f(x) was ahead of the curb - years later, the cassette look is everywhere! Which brings us to our next album…
3.
SHINee - 1 of 1
In an alternate reality, SHINee competed alongside fresh-faced boy groups - making new jack swing music, releasing albums on tape, and alerting fans to schedules with photocopied fliers. That sounds like the 1990s life of H.O.T. fans, right? Luckily for current generation k-poppers, we didn't need an alternate reality, as SHINee released their nostalgia-inducing "1 of 1" on real, working audio cassettes in 2016!
4.
Wonder Girls - Wonder Party
Wonder Girls gave fans an invitation to their "Wonder Party" with this album! Staying true to the theme, this mini album was made to feel like a letter from the girls, with a bunch of postcard-sized photos and lyrics inside the fun transparent pink envelope.
5.
TVXQ - Spellbound
With their "Surisuri" repackage album, TVXQ became playing cards! Inside the large, display-worthy case, the boys were spread out across 52-full color cards that fans can play with. This album is great for fans who love collecting photos of the boys, and even could be used in card games to get older family members into TVXQ!
6.
EXO - Growl
EXO has put out a lot of good looking albums, so it was hard to pick the best one to include on this list. With their breakthrough hit "Growl," the group gave fans a personal feeling, yearbook style package containing a mass of photos and handwritten lyrics. The spiral binding makes for a nice touch, making it feel like a much classier version of a school project you might have done in years past.
7.
Epik High - Shoebox
With their 2nd album under mega-label YG Entertainment, Epik High gave fans an eclectic but well-connected mix of songs, both grandiose and personal. The packaging for it was no different, with beautifully reproduced watercolor pictures, two posters, a fold out double CD package, and even shoebox tags to match the name of the album.
8.
PSY - Psy 6 (Six Rules), Part 1
People came to know PSY as a master of over-the-top music and stages, and this reputation ended up extending to his album packaging. With the album that launched the monumental "Gangnam Style," PSY gave us his CD in a water droplet-like package that featured a hilarious illustration of him as a mermaid. Although it's humorous, from a design standpoint, it's also quite impressive!
9.
miss A - Bad But Good
Everything about miss A's debut made a statement, from the high-kicks to "Bad Bad Not Good" with its famous "shut up boy" refrain. They didn't stop there, though, as their first mini album takes on a triangular format that's sure to stand out on any shelf. Anyone can see their angle - they were going for a sharp debut!
10.
GOT7 - Got It?
GOT7 were out to prove their potential as K-pop stars with their debut, and they went quite literal when it came to the packaging of their first mini album - it's star shaped! Just like their sound, the packaging is both unconventional and chic - it should make a great artsy display piece in any fan's bedroom.
