Korean comics, also known as manhwa, have long served as a rich source of inspiration for K-dramas. While webtoons, the digital evolution of manhwa, have led to numerous hit dramas in recent times, the tradition of adapting illustrated stories for television goes back much further. In fact, several beloved K-drama classics are based on manhwa. These stories, illustrated initially on paper, come to life on screen with all the charm, angst, and beauty that fans of both mediums adore.

Here are five K-drama classics adapted from manhwa that have left a lasting impact on audiences.

Damo [2003]

Set in the Joseon Dynasty, ‘Damo’ tells the story of Chae-ok, a low-ranked female detective who investigates crimes committed by nobles. With a strong heroine at its center, Damo was ahead of its time, mixing period drama with action and tragic romance. Adapted from Bang Hak-gi's manhwa ‘Damo Nam-soon,’ this series was one of the earliest manhwa-based K-drama hits.

Full House [2004]

A cornerstone of the early Hallyu Wave, ‘Full House’ is a rom-com classic that brought together beloved K-drama stars Rain and Song Hye-kyo in a fake-marriage trope. Han Ji-eun, a scriptwriter, ends up living with a famous actor, Lee Young-jae, in her family home after being tricked by friends. Adapted from Won Soo-yeon’s popular manhwa of the same name, ‘Full House’ played a major role in popularising manhwa-based dramas.

Princess Hours [2006]

In an alternate universe where Korea still has a monarchy, an ordinary high school girl, Shin Chae-kyeong, finds herself betrothed to the crown prince. ‘Princess Hours’ was a breakout hit that mixed royal fantasy, teen romance, and palace intrigue. Its extravagant set design, lavish costumes, and fairytale vibe mirrored the visual storytelling of the manhwa ‘Goong’ by Park So-hee, from which it was adapted.

The Scholar Who Walks The Night [2015]

A fusion of historical drama and supernatural fantasy, ‘The Scholar Who Walks The Night’ explores a vampire scholar navigating ancient evil in the Joseon era. Based on the manhwa of the same name, the drama captivated audiences with its dramatic visuals, gothic elements, and emotional depth. It’s a standout for fans of genre-bending storytelling and dark romanticism.

The Bride of Habaek [2017]

Based on the manhwa ‘Bride of the Water God’ by Yoon Mi-kyung, ‘The Bride of Habaek’ revolves around the water god Habaek, a narcissistic deity who descends to Earth to retrieve sacred stones. There, he meets Yoon So-ah, a neuropsychiatrist who’s fated to serve him. With a star-studded cast including Nam Joo-hyuk, Shin Se-kyung, and Krystal Jung, the series blends fantasy, romance, and mythology in a modern setting.

From palace intrigues to supernatural love stories, manhwa adaptations have offered K-dramas a vibrant narrative palette to explore. These five classics showcase how the illustrated page can transform into an addictive television series.
