Not too long after the girls debuted and were promoting "Into the New World", the girls suffered a black-out protest at one of K-pop's biggest annual events, 'Dream Concert'. Usually, K-pop groups will have their own fan "colors" and the fans will display the colors holding light sticks to show their support. Girls' Generation's color is "pink". However, during their performance, no one in the audience made noise or cheered with their lightsticks, meaning the stadium was mostly silent and dark aka "black ocean".

YoonA said, "Back then, while we were promoting our first album 'Into the New World' at 'Dream Concert', there was a 10 minute boycott. We started the stage to a dark, silent stage like no one was even there."
