The police announced on March 24 that they will proceed with an investigation into defamation cases involving actor Kim Soo Hyun and the late Kim Sae Ron.
Acting Commissioner Park Hyun Soo of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency held a regular press briefing that day. During the briefing, Park stated that regarding the case in which Kim Soo Hyun's side filed a complaint against HOVERLAB (Garo Sero Research Institute) for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. He said, “The complaint was received at Gangnam Police Station on the 20th, and an investigation, including questioning the complainant, will be conducted.” He also addressed the investigation into YouTuber Lee Jin Ho’s defamation allegations related to Kim Sae Ron, saying, “The case was assigned to Seodaemun Police Station on the 17th, and we are coordinating a schedule for the complainant’s appearance.”
This case emerged after HOVERLAB disclosed photos of Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron that Kim Sae Ron’s family allegedly provided. The family and HOVERLAB claimed that Kim Soo Hyun had been in a relationship with Kim Sae Ron for six years, starting in November 2015, when she was still a minor. Initially, Kim Soo Hyun's side denied the allegations, but after additional photos of the two were released, they changed their stance, stating that their relationship began only after Kim Sae Ron became an adult.
According to the police, the complaint against HOVERLAB for persistently raising allegations about Kim Soo Hyun’s past relationship was filed with Gangnam Police Station on March 20.
Meanwhile, Bu Ji Seok, the legal representative of Kim Sae Ron’s family from the law firm Buyou, filed a defamation lawsuit against YouTuber Lee Jin Ho on the 19th for spreading false information. Lee Jin Ho has repeatedly uploaded videos denying Kim Sae Ron and Kim Soo Hyun’s past relationship on his YouTube channel since 2022. However, after Kim Sae Ron was found dead at her home in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, on February 16, he made all related videos private.
Kim Sae Ron was caught drunk driving in May 2022 in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam, and was sentenced to a fine of 20 million won the following year. It was reported that she had been struggling financially before she was found deceased in her home last month.
