On February 4, former Crayon Pop member ChoA, who was diagnosed with cervical cancer during her first year of marriage and underwent surgery, shed tears of joy when her doctor assured her that she could start preparing for pregnancy.
The February 3 episode of TV CHOSUN’s 'Lovers of Joseon' featured ChoA, who has been married for five years, and her husband, Kim Dong Kyu. The couple tied the knot in 2021, and during the show, the production team inquired about ChoA,’s current health status, raising curiosity among viewers.
ChoA, revealed that she was diagnosed with cervical cancer when she visited the hospital for a prenatal check-up during her first year of marriage. The shocking news came as an unexpected blow to the couple.
Her husband recalled the devastating moment, saying, "The doctors told us that protecting the uterus was not an option, and the standard medical procedure was a hysterectomy." Before their marriage, the couple had dreamed of a future with children. However, after receiving her diagnosis, ChoA, broke down in tears in the bathroom, fearing she might never be able to have children.
Despite undergoing a procedure to tie the cervix, doctors warned her that even if she conceived, her uterus might not be able to sustain the pregnancy until full term. "If you can hold on until the seventh month, the medical environment allows for the baby to grow healthily," the doctor advised, setting that as the first milestone.
Hearing this, ChoA smiled brightly for the first time in a while and, overwhelmed with emotion, asked, "Is this really true?" before shedding tears of happiness.
When asked why she was so determined to have children despite her struggles, ChoA, shared, "Having a child feels like my purpose in life." She explained, "For the first time in my life, I confronted the idea of death. That made me realize that everything I had worked for—meeting the love of my life, building a family with him, and having a child—was my true purpose. That’s when I understood how deeply I wanted to become a mother. Without a child, life seemed meaningless."
Determined to make their dream come true, ChoA and her husband visited several renowned university hospitals. Fortunately, two hospitals confirmed that surgery was an option for her. In August 2023, she underwent a cancer resection and fertility-preserving surgery. Thankfully, the procedure was successful, and she now undergoes follow-up examinations every three months.
On the day of her latest follow-up appointment, doctors detected a cyst near her ovaries but decided to monitor it for the time being. ChoA, anxiously asked if she could begin preparing for pregnancy, and the doctor reassured her, saying, "There’s no reason why you can't."
