Broadcaster Ann Hyun Mo is facing criticism from netizens after sharing her thoughts on the Jeju Air tragedy through her social media account.
On December 30th KST, Ann posted on her social media story:
“Even on Friday, Saturday, and today, as I board planes for days, I realize how every flight and landing was a matter of luck. Everything has been something to be grateful for. The more I think about it, even every inhale and exhale can feel heartbreaking.”
The post sparked mixed reactions online. Some criticized her choice of words, questioning the appropriateness of linking the tragedy to personal reflections. One netizen commented, “Using such expressions in relation to a tragedy is inappropriate. It seems self-centered and lacks empathy.” Others echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Bringing up her own ‘luck’ feels tone-deaf in this context,” and “Why mention personal fortune at all? It detracts from the focus on the victims.”
On the other hand, some defended Ann’s intention, though they admitted the phrasing could have been better. They stated, “Her heart is in the right place, but the way it was expressed missed the mark. A straightforward message of condolence would have been more fitting.”
The debate highlights the sensitivity surrounding public figures’ comments during times of national mourning, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful and empathetic communication.
