Taiwanese dramas and films have long been rich sources of inspiration for other entertainment industries, offering universally relatable themes of love, loss, personal growth, and the passage of time. Their stories often strike a delicate balance between emotional depth and lighthearted charm, making them perfect candidates for adaptation. As a result, several of Taiwan's most beloved productions have been remade across Asia, with South Korea being a major player in reinterpreting these narratives for its audiences.

Let’s delve into these six standout Korean remakes of popular Taiwanese dramas and films:

A Time Called You

‘A Time Called You’ is a popular Netflix adaptation of the critically acclaimed Taiwanese drama ‘Someday or One Day.’ The time-travel mystery drama captivated viewers with its emotionally rich and suspenseful narrative. The plot centers on Jun-hee (Jeon Yeo-been), who, still grieving her late boyfriend, finds herself transported to 1998 in the body of an 18-year-old named Min-ju. There, she meets Si-heon (Ahn Hyo-seop), who strikingly resembles her lost love — deepening the emotional tension of the story.

Fated to Love You

This 2014 remake brings a Korean touch to the wildly popular Taiwanese rom-com 'Fated to Love You,’ which received the highest ratings during its run. It revolves around a plain, typical office clerk, Mi-yeon (Jang Na-ra), who is constantly overlooked and taken advantage of by her co-workers. An accidental one-night stand with Lee Gun (Jang Hyuk), a wealthy stranger, changes her life when she discovers she’s pregnant. What follows is a heartwarming, humorous journey of transformation, love, and self-discovery.

The Time We Were Not in Love

Based on the award-winning 2011 Taiwanese drama ‘In Time With You,’ ‘The Time We Were Not in Love’ is a 2015 romantic comedy series starring Han Ji-won and Lee Jin-wook as Oh Ha-na and Choi Won, two 34-year-olds who have been best friends since high school. Determined to get married before turning 35, they begin their journey to help one another find “the one” and slowly realise that their bond might have always been something more than friendship.

A Witch’s Love

‘A Witch’s Love’ features Park Seo-joon in his first lead role, opposite the charismatic Uhm Jung-hwa. This remake of the Taiwanese hit ‘My Queen’ explores the unlikely romance between Ban Ji-yeon, a 39-year-old workaholic reporter, and Yoon Dong-ha, a 25-year-old with a gentle soul and a painful past. Despite the age gap and emotional baggage, they find healing and hope in each other. It’s a delightful blend of humor, drama, and heartfelt romance.

Secret: Untold Melody

Released earlier this year, 'Secret: Untold Melody’ is a magical retelling of the iconic Taiwanese film ‘Secret.’ The Korean adaptation stars EXO’s D.O. (Doh Kyung-soo), alongside Won Jin-ah and Shin Ye-eun. The film follows Kim Yu-jun, a piano prodigy and music student, who accidentally encounters Jung-a playing mysterious music in an old practice room on campus, sparking a fantasy romance.

Hear Me: Our Summer

‘Hear Me: Our Summer’ is the heartfelt remake of ‘Hear Me,’ a beloved 2009 Taiwanese romantic film. The story follows Yong-jun (Hong Kyung), a kind-hearted young man who works at his family's lunchbox shop as he falls for Yeo-reum (Roh Yoon-seo), a woman who devotes her life to supporting her hearing-impaired swimmer sister Ga-eul (Kim Min-ju). What begins as love at first sight slowly blossoms into a tender, meaningful relationship built on patience, empathy, and understanding.
