SM Entertainment has been facing a series of controversies and internal turmoil following the departure of founder Lee Soo Man. Despite promises of change and innovation under a new management structure, many point out a lack of effective leadership and inadequate management of artists, which have become increasingly apparent.

The first figure at the center of recent controversy is BoA, a member of SM’s board and one of its artists. On April 5, during a personal live broadcast with TV personality Jun Hyun Moo, BoA appeared to be intoxicated and made rude comments, drawing heavy criticism. In particular, she made inappropriate remarks about Park Na Rae, who was not present, saying things like, “You can't be dating her, you're too good for her,” which many deemed thoughtless and inappropriate.

As backlash intensified, BoA issued a public apology on a fan platform on April 7, stating, “I want to say sorry to Park Na Rae for making inappropriate comments about her in her absence. I've personally apologized to her, and I truly appreciate her generous understanding." Then, on April 15, she shared her emotional struggles, saying, “Over the past few years, I’ve been going through difficult times, not just professionally, but personally as well,” in a heartfelt message to fans.

Taeyeon also found herself in an unexpected controversy. Her solo concerts scheduled for April 19–20 in Tokyo were abruptly canceled just two days before the event. SM stated that “equipment used for the Asia tour failed to arrive in Japan on time,” leading to the cancellation. However, fans were furious over what they perceived as a lack of preparation and irresponsible communication. Many suffered financial losses from travel and lodging expenses, and Taeyeon’s fanbase, SONE, issued an official statement demanding compensation.

On April 18, Taeyeon posted on the fan platform, expressing her deep regret: “It felt like the concert vanished in an instant. I’m so sorry to SONE.” While fans comforted her, saying she, too, was a victim, disappointment toward the agency's response remained strong.

NCT WISH found themselves at the center of criticism for their unengaged demeanor during a broadcast appearance. On April 22, the group appeared on SBS PowerFM's 'Cultwo Show' but responded to questions with minimal words and avoided eye contact, drawing remarks from both the hosts and listeners. In stark contrast, singer Chuu, who appeared during the same segment, brought liveliness and bright energy. This fueled criticism that NCT Wish was “unprepared for a radio appearance.SHINee’s Key, who was also present, subtly addressed the issue by saying on-air, “I'm watching, do better,” giving a message from a senior peer.

Given the series of controversies involving SM artists, many believe these aren’t mere isolated incidents or simple mistakes. Previously, Lee Soo Man played a key role in artist management and brand image coordination. With his absence, questions are rising about whether a proper system is in place to manage talent effectively.

SM, once a pioneering force in K-pop and global expansion, now appears to be struggling with visible cracks in leadership and internal operations under the post-Lee Soo Man era. Fans are calling for more than just apologies, urging SM to shift toward a true system-based management structure.
