At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Gu Bon Gil, representing the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, secured a gold medal, but his wife gave birth to their second son alone while he was still abroad.
This emotional story was featured in a recent episode of the SBS variety show 'Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 - You Are My Destiny,' which aired on August 12 at 10:10 PM.
After achieving his third consecutive Olympic victory in the men’s fencing saber team event, Gu Bon Gil, along with his wife Park Eun Joo, announced the birth of their second child.
Gu, who had missed the birth of their first son, was determined to return home in time for the birth of their second child. However, unforeseen circumstances prevented him from fulfilling this plan. Just two days before the due date, Park Eun Joo encountered an emergency, resulting in a loss of contact with Gu Bon Gil.
As a result, Park Eun Joo had to give birth to their second son on her own.
Upon his return to Korea and arrival at the hospital, Gu Bon Gil was overwhelmed with emotion and broke into tears as he reunited with his wife.
Following their reunion, Gu Bon Gil introduced their second son, often referred to as the "Olympic Baby," to the public for the first time.
During his initial meeting with his newborn son, Gu Bon Gil made the moment even more special by showing him the gold medal he had won, adding to the significance of the occasion.
Despite being only three days old at the time, Gu Bon Gil’s second son displayed a special reaction to the gold medal, surprising those around him with a celebratory gesture that truly embodied the spirit of 'Gu Bon Gil Junior.'
According to Ilsan CHA Hospital, Gu Bon Gil’s second son was born healthy on August 3 at 9:27 PM, weighing 3.17 kg (~7 lbs).
This joyful event occurred just two days after Gu Bon Gil secured his third consecutive Olympic victory in the men’s saber team event against Hungary at the 2024 Paris Olympics, held on August 1st (Korean time) at the Grand Palais in Paris, France.
