Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88.
According to the Associated Press on April 21 (local time), the Vatican announced that Pope Francis died earlier that morning.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell stated, “At 7:25 a.m. today, Bishop Francis of Rome returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was devoted to serving the Lord and the Church.”
He continued, “He taught us to live with faithfulness, courage, and universal love according to the values of the Gospel—especially to live for the poorest and most marginalized.”
He added, “We express deep gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, and we entrust the soul of Pope Francis to God’s infinite and merciful love.”
Pope Francis had recently been hospitalized with a severe case of pneumonia but had recovered and returned to resume his duties at the Vatican.
Just a day before his passing, he made a surprise appearance at the Easter Mass, greeting the faithful gathered at St. Peter’s Square and delivering an Easter message.
