IU and Byun Woo Seok's upcoming MBC drama 21st Century Princess Consort(working title), originally expected to air in the second half of 2025, has officially been rescheduled for broadcast in the first half of 2026 as part of MBC’s Friday-Saturday lineup.

Following the confirmed casting of IU and Byun Woo Seok, Noh Sang Hyun—known for his powerful performances in Pachinko and Love in the Big City—and Gong Seung Yeon—praised for her versatility in The Killing Vote and The First Responders—have also joined as lead actors. 

This marks the first time all four actors are starring in an MBC drama, raising expectations for their on-screen chemistry.

Set in a 21st-century constitutional monarchy in Korea, 21st Century Princess Consort is a romance about defying the barriers of social status. The story follows Seong Hee Joo, a wealthy woman frustrated by her status as a commoner, and Grand Prince Lee Wan, a royal who has everything but the freedom to truly live.

The script, which won the 2022 MBC drama script contest with overwhelming support from judges, has been praised for its dynamic, forward-thinking characters and its compelling romance-driven plot rooted in powerful desires.

IU plays Seong Hee Joo, the intelligent and fiercely competitive second daughter of a wealthy family. Despite her success, she lacks the one thing she can’t buy—noble status. Determined to claim it, she enters a contract marriage with Grand Prince Lee Wan, played by Byun Woo Seok. Their relationship becomes a turning point in both their lives.

Byun Woo Seok plays Grand Prince Lee Wan, the second son of the king, loved by the people but unable to shine due to the burdens of royal life. He’s used to hiding himself, but his encounter with Seong Hee Joo begins to awaken a new side of him. Following his global popularity from Lovely Runner, Byun will now portray a modern prince caught between duty and desire.

Noh Sang Hyun takes on the role of Min Jung Woo, a brilliant prime minister from a prestigious political family. He’s a longtime friend of Lee Wan and a senior to Hee Joo from royal academy days. His connection to both leads draws him into their whirlwind contract marriage, creating emotional tension and intrigue.

Gong Seung Yeon plays Yoon Yi Rang, a woman born into a family that has produced four queens. Never once doubting she was destined to be queen herself, she lives to protect that fate. As a woman who chose the crown over herself, Yi Rang fights to maintain her role no matter the cost.

21st Century Princess Consort will begin filming soon and is set to premiere in the first half of 2026 on MBC.
