IVE member Jang Won Young’s lawsuit against 'Sojang' continues.
The Seoul Central District Court's 9-3 Civil Division has scheduled the first appeal trial hearing for Jang Won Young’s damages claim against 'Sojang' on September 4.
Jang Won Young and her agency, Starship Entertainment, have been pursuing civil and criminal lawsuits, including international litigation, against Sojang since November 2022.
Sojang has been accused of defaming seven celebrities and influencers, including Jang Won Young, by uploading 23 videos on 'Sojang' from October 2021 to June 2023. Sojang also posted 19 videos mocking the appearances of five individuals. Allegations included false claims such as “Jang Won Young was jealous and caused a fellow trainee's debut to be canceled” and “other celebrities engaged in prostitution or had plastic surgery.”
Prosecutors found that Sojang earned 250 million KRW from 'Sojang' over two years starting from June 2021, and some of this revenue was used to purchase real estate. After taking over cases from the police involving Jang Won Young and two other victims in December 2023, the prosecution conducted supplementary investigations, receiving additional complaints from five victims in May. Despite requesting arrest warrants for Sojang in February and April, the court denied them, citing no risk of flight.
During the investigation, Sojang claimed that the YouTube videos were merely expressions of opinion for public interest. However, a prosecution official stated, “Sojang attempted to destroy evidence by operating the YouTube channel anonymously and then deleting it. During a house search, additional videos targeting many celebrities were found on a laptop used for video editing.”
In January, Jang Won Young partially won her 100 million KRW damages lawsuit against Sojang, with the court ordering Sojang to pay the amount plus 12% annual interest until fully paid, along with legal costs.
Sojang, through legal representation, appealed the decision, requested a stay of enforcement, and deposited 100 million KRW to avoid paying the damages.
In March, the appellate court attempted mediation, which ultimately failed. Jang Won Young and Starship remain firm in their stance against leniency.
Starship Entertainment told Star News, “Through our legal representative, we have communicated that our primary aim in this lawsuit is to ensure that cyber defamation receives a stern legal judgment, leaving no room for settlement.”
