A growing number of K-pop idols are making headlines by publicly coming out as members of the LGBTQ+ community, signaling a slow but powerful shift in the traditionally conservative K-pop industry.

Most recently, Just B member Bain (Song Byeonghee) came out during the group’s 'Just ODD world tour' concert in Los Angeles on the 22nd. “I’m proud to be part of the LGBTQ+ community,” Bain told fans during the live show. His statement drew significant attention as he became the first male idol of Korean nationality in an active boy group to come out openly.

Bain's announcement follows a string of courageous revelations from other idols. Just last month, Lara, a member of HYBE’s global girl group KATSEYE, also came out. On the fan community platform Weverse, she shared, “I like girls.” Reflecting on her decision, Lara said, “I was so scared. I wondered if people would accept me or if I would lose my opportunities.”

However, she expressed deep gratitude for her fans: “They welcomed me with warmth, love, and support, which helped me accept myself more confidently. I’m thankful and I love you all.” She added, “It’s scary to come out, especially when you’re a person of color. But I’m proud of myself. My sexual identity is a part of me, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

Another trailblazer is Jiae, a former member of the girl group Wassup, who publicly came out as bisexual back in 2020. She wrote on her personal account, “I love both men and women. Can you understand that? I’m happy because I have a lovely girlfriend.” In February of this year, Jiae shared a sweet photo of herself and her girlfriend, along with the caption, “I love you, my girlfriend.”

Jiae also opened up about her journey on Channel S's reality show 'Sisters Attack,' explaining, “Until 25, I dated many men, but none of the relationships lasted more than three months. I kept wondering, ‘Is this really love?’ Eventually, I thought, ‘Maybe I don’t have to date men. Maybe I should try dating women.’ And I did.”

These idols' courageous disclosures are paving the way for more open conversations about sexual identity in the Korean entertainment world, inspiring fans around the world and adding to a broader cultural shift toward acceptance and representation.
