According to reports from Yonhap News and others on February 8 KST, the Cyber Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police has forwarded soccer player Hwang Ui Jo (32) to prosecution for illegally filming his sexual partner, a criminal offense according to the Sexual Violence Punishment Act.
Hwang is also facing charges of revealing identifying information about the victim in a statement issued by his legal representative, also a criminal offense under the same act. Hwang's lawyer, who publicly released the statement, has also been handed over to prosecution for the same charges.
Previously, in June of 2023, Hwang had filed a complaint with the police against an online user who claimed to be "his former lover" and shared photos and videos of Hwang and women on Instagram. The online user has also been accused of claiming since May that Hwang had relationships with multiple women. However, during the investigation process, the police found evidence of Hwang illegally filming his partners, and converted him into a suspect in November.
While Hwang's side claimed that the filming was done with "consent", his statement was soon met with criticism for disclosing identifying information about his victim.
Meanwhile, the individual who spread photos and videos of Hwang and threatened him was found to be Hwang's sister-in-law. The sister-in-law was indicted in December and is currently facing trial.
