Netizens debate whether LUCY plagiarized multiple Japanese songs

Netizens are discussing LUCY's discography and debating potential plagiarism concerns.

On an online forum, netizens compared an X thread featuring snippets of songs released by LUCY with prior tracks that several listeners claim they closely resemble. As a band, LUCY has been officially active since 2020 and has released a significant number of albums under the company Mystic Story.

According to netizens who believe there may be grounds for plagiarism concerns, LUCY's song "You're Right" has been compared to a previously released song by the Japanese band Yorushika, "Say It" (2017).

In the thread of the X post above, other comparisons include LUCY's "Hippo" with Japanese artist Eve's "Last Dance" (2018), LUCY's "Villain" with Eve's "Outsider" (2019), and LUCY's "Opening" with the opening theme song of the Japanese anime 'Chrono Crusade.' Additionally, LUCY's "OUTRO" has been compared to MapleStory's OST "The Cygnus Garden" (2017).

Furthermore, LUCY's music video for "Complex" has drawn comparisons to Eve's music video for "Insomnia," with claims that the animation narrative mirrors that of Eve’s work.

Given the similarities between LUCY's work and that of many Japanese artists, netizens are agreeing with these posts, saying the resemblance is "almost undeniable," and that it feels as if the band is deliberately trying to emulate Japanese bands.

In particular, the songs "You're Right" and "Hippo" have drawn the sharpest criticism, with many pointing out their striking resemblance to the mentioned Japanese songs.

However, a notable portion of netizens argued that while similarities are noticeable, they do not amount to "plagiarism." Some believe the resemblance may stem from drawing inspiration rather than outright copying, and point out that subculture influences often lead to overlapping styles, especially in genres influenced by Japanese anime soundtracks.

Comments include:

"This is undeniable."

"They basically plagiarized a bunch of Japanese songs. Is this their pursuit of a particular style or what?"

"Are my ears weird? I can't tell what's similar."

"I don't know if it's plagiarism, but it does sound similar."

"I thought 'You're Right' was just somewhat similar, but listening to 'Hippo' feels undeniable."

"I don't know about the music video, but the songs sound similar."

"'Hippo' sounds way too identical."

"The one that resembles 'Outsider' sounds exactly the same."

"There have been plagiarism suspicions around Lucy for years, it's surprising it's only now becoming an issue."

"I love Eve, so it really upsets me to see them brought up like this... I'm seriously angry."

"The first song sounds insanely similar. If you wanted to pin it as plagiarism, it wouldn't even be hard — it sounds like they outright copied it. The rhythm, melody, instrument sound, even the 8-bar intro — there's literally nothing different except for minor chord changes."

"It's ambiguous to call it plagiarism... I honestly can't tell. It's a common chord progression, and only a tiny part of the song feels similar."

"After listening, all four songs feel like plagiarism... and three of them are by the same composer, which makes it even more suspicious."

"I listened to them, but I really can't tell if it's plagiarism. The vibe is similar, but the melodies are completely different. For plagiarism, the melodies have to be the same."

"If you're going to plagiarize, it should at least be subtle. Here, they just copied the lines from famous songs that everyone knows. Isn't that obviously undeniable?"

"I don't know... maybe I have bad ears. But the Japanese songs are really good."

"The atmosphere of the instruments is similar, but it doesn't sound like plagiarism to me."

"I used to enjoy Lucy's music, but objectively speaking, this feels way too blatant. Even the structure and the emotional delivery feel copied."

"I love Yorushika’s songs, and this is complete plagiarism."

"It does have a similar vibe, but I can't be sure it's plagiarism."

"Honestly, I don't even know what the standard for plagiarism is anymore."

"It feels like they made the song after listening to those Japanese tracks."

"I don't think it's plagiarism, but it definitely feels like they used it as a reference."

"Except for the very first video comparison, the rest doesn't feel like plagiarism. It just sounds like they used the band sound as a reference."

"It's similar, but legally, I don't think it would count as plagiarism."

"I don't think it'll be legally considered plagiarism, but the fact that it reminds people of specific songs while listening is already a bad sign..."

"I don't think it's plagiarism, but it definitely feels influenced."

"Huh? This really doesn't feel like plagiarism at all."

"It's similar, but definitely not something you'd call clear-cut plagiarism. But since the video style is also similar, it feels more excessive and that's why they're getting more hate."

"They're totally different songs; it's just the genre that feels similar."

"It's not plagiarism, but you can tell they really tried to mimic it."

"Since there’s no strict definition of plagiarism, people are split. But if the original Japanese artist says it's too similar, there would be no way to defend it — it really does sound alike."

"At the very least, they seem to have drawn heavily from subculture-style Japanese music."

"It definitely sounds Japanese-inspired, but I don't think it crosses into plagiarism."

"They cleverly dodged it, but there are too many songs that sound suspiciously similar to just call it coincidence."

"'You're Right' really sounds identical to the Japanese song..."
