Korean Films lead box office success in 2023, continuing their strong performance into the new year.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated computerized ticketing network, 'Noryang: Deadly Sea (Director Kim Han-min) drew an audience of 777,977 over the weekend of the 5th week of December (29th to 31st).
It ranked number one at the box office for two consecutive weeks. Since its release on December 20th last year, it has been at the top for 12 consecutive days. As of the 31st, the cumulative audience count was 3,437,850.
'Spring in Seoul' (Director Kim Sung-soo) settled at number two, contributing to the double-hit success. Over the weekend, 739,490 people nationwide watched the film. To date, 11,854,819 people have visited cinemas to see it.
These two films are leading the domestic film industry. Their combined box office revenue share is a whopping 74.1%. This means that 7 to 8 out of every 10 moviegoers chose these films.
Japanese animations and DC superhero movies could not make a significant impact. 'New Dimension! Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Battle in the Miraculous Magic World' and 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom' each attracted about 120,000 viewers.
