On August 1, JTBC featured an exclusive interview with the talented actress Song Hye Kyo.
Dressed elegantly in a gray suit dress, black stockings, and stylish black heels, the actress graced the JTBC office building in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul.
Recently honored with the Best Actress Award at the prestigious Baeksang Arts Awards for her compelling portrayal of Moon Dong Eun in 'The Glory,' Song Hye Kyo's acceptance speech struck a deep chord with the audience. She took the opportunity to express her heartfelt gratitude and love for her family, especially her devoted mother, who has been her unwavering support.
Song Hye Kyo shared, "My mother's happiness was paramount for me. She enjoyed watching 'The Glory,' and her approval meant the world to me, even beyond the accolades. I've always been concerned about how the audience would react to my work, but my mother's perspective mattered the most."
Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized that receiving the award was not just about personal achievement but a testament to the collaborative effort of the entire team behind 'The Glory.' Despite her earlier success, she admitted to being more ambitious and keen on exploring different genres in her recent work.
She shared, "I don't believe I received the award because I solely did well. The work itself was praiseworthy and it was created through the collective efforts of a good cast, a good director, and a good writer. I wanted to share happiness with them there. I still have many shortcomings and I also wanted to challenge myself with different genres."
She further explained, "I yearned for a change, and 'The Glory' gave me that opportunity. It was a thrilling adventure that I had been waiting for a long time. The challenge was demanding, and I had moments of doubt while portraying the character. Yet, it was immensely gratifying and enjoyable. I hope that sense of excitement and novelty translated to the viewers."
Deeply grateful to writer Kim Eun Sook, known for her success with 'Descendants of the Sun,' Song Hye Kyo spoke warmly about their interactions during the creation of 'The Glory.'
Song Hye Kyo revealed, "I shared my desire to work in a different genre with writer Kim Eun Sook, with whom I am a close friend. It was a pleasant surprise when she sent me the script for 'The Glory.' I was thrilled because it was precisely the kind of character and story I had longed to portray."
When asked about her co-stars, she fondly referred to them as the "friends of the perpetrator" in a playful tone. She playfully joked, "It's hard to say I would be thankful to them since they're the friends of my perpetrator. Hahaha. It was fun acting with them and I enjoyed meeting good juniors and I was happy to be able to work together with them."
Finally gaining recognition for her acting skills in her 40s, Song Hye Kyo offered insights into the challenges that come with aging as an actress. Contrary to her younger self's perception that acting would become easier with age, she discovered new complexities in embodying characters as she matured.
Song Hye Kyo candidly said, "In my 20s, I would see my seniors in their 30s and 40s, and I thought 'acting would get easier when I become their age.' Now I am at that age but it (acting) is not easy still." She added, "The characters I portray are becoming older as well, so I find it more challenging to relate to their experiences. I lived through my 20s so I would be able to relate easier to characters in their 20s, however, I don't know what I will experience in the future and I also don't know what the characters my age experience. So it requires constant study and understanding to bring out the essence of each character authentically."
