The rising power rookie girl group, FIFTY FIFTY, which has undeniably captivated the global music industry, is now embroiled in a heated controversy surrounding their exclusive contract with their label, ATTRAKT.
The news of the feud is coming as a great disappointment to fans all across the globe since the rising rookie girl group now faces an uncertain future.
This all started when FIFTY FIFTY's label claimed that an outside agency was attempting to poach the group. ATTRAKT stated, "This outside party made slanderous allegations against us and has been luring our artists into making the mistake of ignoring their legally exclusive contracts and signing with them instead."
To gain a comprehensive insight into the rise of the issue, it is crucial to understand that ATTRAKT is run by CEO Jun Hong Joon and is the label that has the sole management rights of FIFTY FIFTY. When ATTRAKT first decided to launch the group, CEO Jun Hong Joon invested 8 billion KRW (~6.1 million USD). According to YouTuber Lee Jin Ho, the 8 billion KRW has been used for the production cost of the group, including the hiring of the external music production company, The Givers, led by CEO Ahn Sung Il.
The two companies were in agreement in a partnership in producing FIFTY FIFTY, with ATTRAKT holding the management rights while The Givers were in charge of the music production and managing projects under a service contract.
With the success of the group, FIFTY FIFTY was able to seek investments from larger labels. There have even been news reports that they were able to successfully receive significant investments from other companies. However, these articles stated that The Givers was the company that would receive the investment money.
According to former entertainment reporter turned YouTuber Lee Jin Ho, The Givers does not have the rights to these investments since FIFTY FIFTY's sole management rights belong to ATTRAKT.
That is when the allegations that there was an outside party attempting to poach the group started being reported. The specific allegation was that The Givers' CEO Ahn Sung Il is the third party trying to take the girl group from ATTRAKT following their immense popularity.
After the news that a third company was trying to poach the girls was released, the four members all suddenly filed for a provisional injunction to suspend their exclusive contract with their agency, ATTRAKT.
The members claimed that their reputation has been damaged. The legal representative of the group has stated that various issues with the agency, such as non-transparent settlements and unilateral attempts to enforce contracts despite health conditions, prompted this action.
This injunction further increases the suspicion that The Givers is trying to take the members under their wing. Moreso because if the group FIFTY FIFTY signs with The Givers, they would be entitled to the large investments for the group.
Now the two agencies are entangled in a feud in regard to this issue. If FIFTY FIFTY were to change agencies, the ATTRAKT CEO would lose the 8 billion KRW he had initially invested in launching the group.
According to Lee Jin Ho, the ATTRAKT CEO Jun Hong Joon allegedly requested The Givers to continue their cooperation until FIFTY FIFTY releases their 3rd album, but the request was rejected by CEO Ahn Sung Il.
Lee Jin Ho brought to attention that The Givers had previous cases where its artists joined The Givers after filing a provisional injunction to terminate their exclusive contracts with their agencies. Singer Son Seung Yeon and actor Jung Ui Je are the artists under The Givers who immediately joined the company after terminating their contracts with their former labels.
Lee Jin Ho has pointed out that there were previous cases that are similar to the current situation with FIFTY FIFTY. He stressed that Ahn Sung Il has a negative reputation with industry insiders due to the previous two cases.
The YouTuber concluded with concerns for the rookie girl group that should be spreading their wings further and achieving higher success is now embroiled in a messy controversy.
I'm afraid the members aren't being loyal, I'm disappointed in them. I hope this gets fixed soon.
