Korean cuisine has been gaining global recognition for its diverse flavors and unique dishes. However, cultural differences and misconceptions can sometimes lead to interesting situations.
Recently, on the new Korean TV show 'K-Tray,' foreign children's mistaken belief that Kimbap (Korean Seaweed Rice Rolls) is sushi sparked a discussion among Korean netizens.
In the latest episode of 'K-Tray,' the cast members prepared a hearty Korean meal for American children. On this day, Chef Lee Yeon Bok and his team prepared Kimbap, Beansprout Soup with Tofu, Rice Tteokbokki, Dakgangjeong (Sweet Crispy Korean Fried Chicken), mini corndogs, and Yanggaeng (Sweet red bean jelly snack).
Many children in this episode mistakenly identified Kimbap as sushi, causing a discussion in a popular online community. Korean online users did not find fault with the children but were disappointed that Kimbap was not widely recognized as a Korean cuisine despite the popularity of K-pop, K-content, and food in the United States.
Korean netizens commented, "In South America, they call Kimbap sushi too, it's not their fault," "Sigh, I guess we have to work harder to let people know that Kimbap and Sushi are different," "I guess this is the same as all pastries being considered as 'Ppang (Bread)' in Korea," "I feel like Korean cuisine should be promoted more overseas," and "They are two different things."
Well, I was introduced to Japanese cuisine and sushi before I had Korean cuisine so when I saw kimbap I also thought it was sushi. 🤷♀️
