Netizens criticized several YouTubers for parodying scenes from 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo'.
On July 18, one netizen created a post on an online community forum titled, "YouTubers who got into a 'caricature of autism' controversy for copying Woo Young Woo". Here, the netizen included several instances where YouTubers uploaded content where they were seen imitating the behavioral characteristics of Woo Young Woo from the drama 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo'. Woo Young Woo is a genius lawyer who is on the autistic spectrum, and actress Park Eun Bin portrays Woo Young Woo using a particular way of speech and walking, a special interest in whales, always listening to music on her headphones, and a strict way of eating the Korean kimbap dish. However, the YouTubers began to receive a lot of criticism from viewers. Many criticized that the YouTube videos looked like they were making fun of people with autism spectrum disorder.
Below is the YouTube Shorts video uploaded by one YouTuber, who acts out the different traits of a person who is "completely absorbed" into the drama 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo'. The traits include opening one's eyes in an extreme way, listening to headphones, having a sudden interest in whales, and eating kimbap vertically.
In the TikTok video tweeted below, it shows a woman with an apron telling her husband to eat, so that she can be a good wife who doesn't starve her husband. However, throughout the video the woman is heard imitating Woo Young Woo's way of speech, which is sometimes seen among individuals with autism spectrum disorder.
Both YouTubers uploaded an apology for their videos after being heavily criticized by many viewers.
In response, some netizens commented:
"Are they insane?"
"They must be taking advantage of the [drama's] high views loll."
"They have so much to say [in their apology letter] loll. They're acting as if they are so logical. There is no solution here loll."
"This is making me puke. I usually don't do this because I'm lazy, but I actually pressed the 'report' button this time."
"How can they do this..."
"As a family member of someone who has a disability, there are too many instances like this so the first one is something I can just pass. But the second one really makes me so angry."
"How many times do we need to tell them to not copy the traits of people who are considered the less advantaged in society? The drama probably thought hard and contemplated a lot before producing it, but how can [the YouTubers] just make a caricature of that? Their thoughts are too short."
"They're claiming until the end that they didn't make fun of them loll."
Park Eun Bin has played the role respectfully with many people on the autistic spectrum praising her work, I even saw videos of mothers with autistic children who said they loved her portrayal and those of younger children saying they felt their worries melt away about the future of their young children. These videos however... they border on "infantilism" which is something many autistic adults point out as a very harmful stereotype. Worse yet people seem to think it's now "cute" to mimic neuro divergency. Don't even get me started on people who think it's funny. We can appreciate, learn and even love without exploiting and extrapolating it for ourselves for some "cute aesthetic".
