Dazed Korea has released the cover images of its 13th Anniversary issue for April, featuring what the celebrated avant-garde fashion magazine calls the most iconic and “Dazed” being in the world, G-Dragon. Dazed released eight covers featuring the music and fashion superstar, as well as a 58-page story spread featuring candid photographs and artwork that GD created on set.
Some of the covers feature the elfin star’s delicately beautiful face and highlight his androgynous look, with focused shots of his eyes and ring bedecked hands. The whole shoot seems to be a celebration of GD’s own style, and unlike other editorial features, it does not seem alien to the model… It is as if we have seen these images of GD before, but they are new and yet so profoundly and characteristically and recognizably GD. And that, as people who understand fashion might argue, is the difference between GD and other celebrities—they wear styles and look stylish—GD creates styles and IS stylish.
Although G-Dragon has not released any new music since 2017’s paradigm-changing USB album Kwon Ji Yong, he has remained at the center of the fashion and creative worlds throughout his hiatus from music. While he was doing his mandatory military service—a matter of pride for able-bodied men in South Korea-- he still managed to set trends, even though the lament in fashion circles was that fashion in Korea had stopped at the Balenciaga "ugly shoe" since GD enlisted.
After his honorable discharge from the army, G-Dragon released two astronomically popular sneaker collaborations between his own successful fashion label PeaceMinusOne and Nike, with resale values of these highly coveted shoes sprouting a whole industry of sneaker resale in South Korea.
The world is now eagerly awaiting new music from G-Dragon, with rumors of comebacks and music videos being filmed trending almost every week on social media. Could this new Dazed feature be a sign of an imminent comeback? For ordinary celebrities, that is often the case; for GD, however, the rules are different. Last year he was featured on or created two Vogue Korea covers and yet released no new musical content at all.
But yet again, his fans remain hopeful.
You become a popular fashion magazine anniversary cover even when on hiatus. This is real impact and influence. Your idol can’t relate. Nobody does it like G Dragon.
