MTV has just announced the nominees for 2019 VMA's and a big question mark is posed again.
Last year, BTS, with all their achievements, were not nominated for not a single category at the VMA's which angered a lot of people. Now this year, they are nominated for four awards, one of them is "best k-pop" which, surprisingly, is a new category.
The 7 boys are known as record breakers and "chart bullies"and this year alone they have more achievement than most western artists yet they are nowhere in sight in the main categories.
BTS's latest album 'Map of the Soul: PERSONA', which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 232,000 album-equivalent units (including 196,000 pure album sales), has now sold over 500,000 units in the US.
It also debuted at number one on Australia's ARIA Albums Chart, becoming the first chart-topping album sung in an Asian language, and is BTS' first number one album in the United Kingdom, as well as the first Korean musical act to reach number one, with 26,500 album-equivalent units, 68% of which came from pure sales.
'Map of the Soul: PERSONA' is the best selling albums of 2019 worldwide so far(via UWC). It also reaches 10 weeks at #1 on Billboard World Albums this week.
It has been certified so far Gold by RIAJ , 3xMillion by KMCA and Silver by BPI.
The lead single "Boy With Luv", which debuted at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 with 31,000 pure sales, is one of the 10 songs that got RIAA Platinum certified(United States) so far this year. It is also RIA Gold certified(Australia).
"Boy with Luv" currently holds the record for the song with the most music show wins after the 2000s in South Korea with 21 wins and the song's MV is the most viewed online music video in 24 hours.
"Make it Right" ( which charted on the Hot 100, debuting at number 95 with 11,600 pure sales and making BTS the first Korean artist to have two simultaneous songs appear on the chart ), "HOME", "Dream Glow", "Dionysus" and "Mikrokosmos" have now sold more than 100,000 units each in the US.
The bangtan boys are also the artist with the most #1 on the World Digital Song Sales chart
Their latest tour "Love Yourself: Speak Yourself" is the higest grossing and highest attendance tour for the month of May with $51.7M and 384,498 tickets sold.
BTS is also 4th highest paid performer by album sales in the US so far. ($2.2M)
The fans demanded MTV in 2018 to recognise BTS as one of the biggest act in the world, which they are, yet it looks like the VMA's are not quiet understanding that with the new category.
I don't get why people are angry. Yes BTS has dominated the western market but their genre of music is Kpop so they were place there, its even a new category which could be solely made for them for crying out loud.
