7 Spicy Korean Dishes That May Be Too Hot For You To Handle

Buzz

1. Tteokbokki

Made from rice cake, fish cake, and red chili sauce, Tteokbokki is one of Korea's favorite snacks. Often sold as a street snack in Korea, it is the perfect on-the-go food. The secret ingredient in this food the red chili sauce, or gochujang, which is found in many of South Korea's common dishes.

2. Buldak

Buldak became extremely popular in Korea due to its extremely spicy flavoring. "Bul" means fire and "dak" means chicken — directly translating into "fire chicken." The main ingredients in this trending dish are chicken and unsurprisingly, gochujang.

3. Ramyun

Often referred to as ramen, the Korean version is called ramyun. Korean ramyun is made to be an instant-cook meal for those looking for a quick meal. Unlike other noodle varieties, korean ramyun is notorious for being extremely spicy.

4. Nakji Bokkeum

Nakji bokkeum is a form of stir-fried food, more specifically octopus, with spicy flavoring. Often cooked to be as spicy as possible, this dish is served with sides such as soup or noodles to help negate the spiciness. The idea may seem counter-intuitive, but many Koreans swear by this dish.

5. Jjamppong

A Chinese-Korean fusion dish that has become extremely popular due to it being a delicious, hearty meal. Jjampong has found its way in restaurants all over Korea and is composed of thick noodles, seafood, vegetables, and chili oil.

6. Kimchi Jjigae

"Jjigae" means stew in Korean, which makes kimchi jjigae translate directly into "kimchi stew." Its primary ingredient is kimchi and is often combined with other ingredients such as tofu, pork, or seafood. Because the stew is more flavorful when cooked with older, more fermented kimchi, the dish is a very popular because of the surplus of kimchi in most Korean households.

7. Spicy Fried Wings

Although this dish does not stray too far from the American chicken wings that we are familiar with, Korean-style chicken wings differ because they are double fried, ultimately creating a harder, crispier outer shell. It is then supplemented with a coating of glazed flavoring. The infamous spicy glaze is often regarded as too spicy, even by Korean standards, and believe it or not, is not the most popular flavor of choice. Korean chicken wings are consumed with a side of pickled radish — which is especially helpful in negating the spiciness for those brave enough to take this route.
