A devastating plane crash occurred on the morning of December 29 at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do, South Korea. A passenger aircraft with 181 people on board, including 175 passengers and 6 crew members, crashed while attempting to land. The incident has resulted in at least 28 confirmed deaths, with more casualties feared as rescue operations continue.
According to South Korea’s Korea Airports Corporation and the Jeollanam-do Fire Department, the accident took place at approximately 9:07 AM when Jeju Air flight 7C2216, a Boeing 737-800, was attempting to land on the runway after departing from Bangkok, Thailand. During the approach, the aircraft crashed into the outer wall of the runway, causing severe damage to the fuselage and sparking a fire.
As of now, two survivors have been rescued from the rear section of the plane, but the front and middle sections of the aircraft are expected to have sustained more serious damage, potentially increasing the death toll. Firefighters and emergency personnel were able to quickly suppress the flames, and search-and-rescue operations have focused on the rear of the plane, where survivors were found.
The crash has shocked the nation and raised concerns about aviation safety, as Muan International Airport is a key regional hub in the southwest of the country. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with early reports indicating potential issues during the landing sequence. The plane’s black boxes, which will help determine the cause of the disaster, are expected to be recovered soon.
This tragic incident is one of the worst aviation accidents in South Korea in recent years, and it has cast a somber shadow over the nation. As the emergency teams continue their efforts, the full scope of the disaster remains unclear, but it is certain that many lives have been lost in this heart-wrenching accident.
