When thinking of South Korea, many travelers tend to only think of Seoul and, as a result, stay within Seoul, exploring, shopping, and eating all in the capital city. However, if you venture outside the typical Seoul lines, you’ll find that Korea has much more to offer. One of the must-visit places for a day trip is Gwangju. Known for its rich cultural history and as the hometown of BTS member J-Hope, Gwangju offers a unique experience that showcases a different side of Korea.

1. Asia Culture Center

The Asia Culture Center is a unique theater complex, with most of the center being underground! Featuring various indoor and outdoor exhibitions, arts, architecture, and galleries, there is always some kind of event taking place here.

Explore the vast underground exhibitions at the Asia Culture Center.

2. Penguin Village

Can you actually find real penguins here? Sadly, no, but Penguin Village is just as adorable. Filled with quirky and eclectic decor, it’s a fantastic spot for photos and a unique experience in Gwangju.

Enjoy the whimsical charm of Penguin Village.

3. Dwinggul Cave

While traditional Korean homes, called hanoks, are common sights in the city, Gwangju offers a unique attraction with Dwinggul Cave, a walkable cave in the middle of the city. It’s an unusual and fascinating place to explore.

Experience the unique Dwinggul Cave in the heart of Gwangju.

4. Guitar Street

Similar to Kim Kwangseok-gil in Daegu, Guitar Street in Gwangju pays homage to musicians. With multiple music and guitar-themed cafes, this charming street also features many works of art. If you walk straight up the hill, you’ll end up in Sajik Park, making it two places in one!

Discover the musical charm of Guitar Street and the scenic Sajik Park.

5. Gwangju Family Land

Also known as Uchi Park, Gwangju Family Land is the city’s best amusement park. It doubles as a carnival, offering a full day of fun and excitement for visitors of all ages.

Enjoy a fun-filled day at Gwangju Family Land.

6. 5.18 Memorial Park

You definitely cannot skip this location. Gwangju’s iconic 5.18 Memorial Park serves as a poignant reminder of the pro-democracy uprising. Visiting this park, you’ll feel a deep connection to those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of others.

Reflect on history and honor the fallen at 5.18 Memorial Park.

Make sure to add Gwangju to your travel itinerary for a well-rounded experience of South Korea’s rich culture and history!
