Actor Kim Soo Hyun’s recent press conference aimed at denying allegations of dating a minor has been met with a chilly public response—and has unexpectedly sparked renewed interest in a satirical scene from his hit drama ‘My Love from the Star’.
On March 31st KST, Kim Soo Hyun held an emergency press conference at the Stanford Hotel in Sangam-dong, Seoul, dressed in an all-black suit and appearing meticulously styled, down to the professionally done hair and makeup. Notably, he did not shave, a detail some interpreted as an attempt to appear somber or emotionally affected.
But instead of drawing sympathy, many online commenters found his presentation eerily reminiscent of a 2013 scene from ‘My Love from the Star’. In the show, top star Cheon Song Yi (played by Jun Ji Hyun) dramatically declares her intent to hold a press conference, to which her friend Hong Hye In (played by Hong Jin Kyung) responds with a tongue-in-cheek tutorial on the “art of the perfect press conference.”
“Lose the smile, go for the sad, innocent look. Tilt your gaze 15 degrees down like you’re about to cry at any second,” she advises. “No accessories—it’s not a fashion shoot. Wear all black. Look pale and exhausted. Don’t forget a gauze handkerchief. Stay on the verge of tears, but only cry in the last five minutes—bam!”
Netizens quickly drew comparisons, with comments like “He really looked like he followed this scene step by step,” and “Of all the things to skip, why not the full hair and makeup?” Some even flocked to YouTube to rewatch the drama scene, leaving comments like “Here for the prophecy—it aged too well.”
While Kim Soo Hyun hoped to clear his name through the press conference, it seems the optics have only added fuel to public skepticism.
