The identity of the assailant who targeted Lee Jae Myung, the Democratic Party of Korea representative, has been partially disclosed.
According to the findings of the police investigation on January 2, the individual who assaulted Representative Lee Jae Myung has been identified as a man in his 60s residing in Chungcheongnam-do (South Chungcheong Province).
It is reported that he procured a weapon online to carry out the crime, although confirmation regarding his Democratic Party membership is still pending.
During the police questioning, the man confessed to harboring an intent to kill, acknowledging the premeditated nature of the act. The police intend to pursue the investigation with charges of attempted murder.
On the morning of January 2, at approximately 10:27 AM, the assailant approached Representative Lee Jae Myung, who was conducting a scheduled visit to the new airport site in Gadeokdo, Busan, and stabbed him with a knife. Following the attack, Representative Lee, who had sustained a neck wound, collapsed, and the assailant was promptly apprehended at the scene.
After being transferred from the incident location to Busan University Hospital, Representative Lee Jae Myung was airlifted to Seoul National University Hospital for surgery around 1 PM on the same day.
Concerning Representative Lee's condition, the Democratic Party has conveyed their concern, stating, "There is suspicion of damage to the carotid artery," highlighting the potential risk of severe bleeding. Consequently, he has been transferred to Seoul National University Hospital for surgery.
I was not expecting it to be a 60 year old man, that's for sure. Anyway, the theory that they stabbed Lee Jae Myung because he refused to provide an autograph has been debunked. This was a premeditated attack and hopefully, his prison sentence will reflect that. Key word: hopefully.
