On April 2nd KST, IU spoke candidly about the political controversy surrounding her, during a press interview for the Netflix series ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’ held at the Ambassador Seoul Grand Ballroom in Jung-gu.
When asked about being misunderstood or facing rumors contrary to her intent, IU responded with humility and gratitude: “It would be a lie to say I’ve never experienced it, but honestly, I’ve often been seen in a better light than I deserve. I never imagined I’d be loved for this long doing this job. Sometimes the feedback is so overwhelming I can’t even keep it together, but that’s not even a fair trade-off — I’ve received far more love than criticism.”
In December of last year, IU prepaid 200 breads, 200 drinks, and 200 bowls of gukbap for fans attending a protest rally in Yeouido calling for President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment. While many praised the gesture as a show of support for her fans, it also sparked backlash from some Yoon supporters. They began boycotting brands endorsed by IU, created a so-called ‘impeachment supporters list,’ and labeled her with the nickname ‘LIU’ (a portmanteau of “leftist” and “IU”).
Addressing the controversy, IU shared: “I wouldn’t say it didn’t bother me at all, but I’ve never actually watched any of the videos myself. I never thought, ‘Why are they doing this only to me?’ I just figured… maybe that’s part of the job. It’s a sign people are paying attention. At some point I found myself wondering, ‘When did I become someone who draws this much attention — good or bad?’”
She added, “That’s usually how I frame it. Of course, if someone crosses a serious line or if my agency decides certain behavior can’t be overlooked, I believe it’s necessary to take action. But I don’t really fall into the mindset of, ‘Why me?’”
IU’s composed and thoughtful response once again showcased her signature maturity, reinforcing why she continues to be one of the most respected figures in Korean entertainment.
