Exy, also known as Chu So Jung, of the girl group WJSN, is gaining recognition not only as an artist but also as a prolific producer. Her talents as a songwriter and producer place her among industry heavyweights such as G-Dragon and (G)I-DLE Soyeon, known for their substantial copyright earnings.
Debuting in February 2016 as the leader and main rapper of WJSN, Chu So Jung has shown remarkable versatility and passion throughout her career. In an interview held on December 19 at the TenAsia headquarters in Jungnim-dong, Seoul, she reflected on her journey. Before her debut, she appeared on 'Unpretty Rapstar 2', showcasing bold determination and setting the stage for her multifaceted career.
WJSN, under Exy’s leadership, proved their mettle by clinching victory in the fierce competition on 'Queendom 2' in 2022. While actively performing as Exy, Chu So Jung has recently shifted focus to acting, adopting her real name for these endeavors. Last year, she made a memorable cameo appearance in the drama 'Marry YOU', and she is currently anticipating the release of the series 'Heo's Diner' and the film 'Eighteen Youth'. She is also filming Divorce Insurance.
In addition to her performances, Exy has demonstrated impressive producing skills. She has contributed to WJSN's music and worked on albums for artists such as IVE, The Boyz, CRAVITY, and recently, ILY:1.“As someone who loves K-pop, I find producing just as exciting as performing. Working with WJSN was wonderful, but collaborating with other artists has been equally rewarding,” she shared with a bright smile.
When asked about copyright royalties, she humorously remarked, “They’re quite substantial and satisfying.” Exy further revealed that among WJSN members, she earns the most from copyrights, adding, “The number of songs I’ve worked on sets me apart. Even my family doesn’t know how much I earn. It’s a blessing that supports me even during downtime.” She added that the royalties have enabled her to express gratitude to those around her, even when she isn’t actively performing or acting.
Exy also shared her thoughts on As You Wish, a WJSN track cherished for over five years: “Every year-end before the New Year, I used to feel anxious and uncertain. But seeing how people connect with As You Wish to hope for a better year changed my perspective. Knowing the song brings comfort and hope to others is deeply meaningful, and it continues to inspire me.”
With her multifaceted talents and ever-expanding creative contributions, Chu So Jung stands as a testament to the evolving roles of idols in the entertainment industry.
