The highly anticipated Squid Game season 2 failed to win at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, continuing the disappointment from its first season in 2022.
The ceremony was held in Los Angeles on January 5 (local time), with Squid Game 2 nominated for Best Television Series – Drama. The competition included the award-winning Japanese historical drama Shōgun, which triumphed with 18 Emmy wins in September 2023, as well as Netflix's The Diplomat, Apple TV+'s Slow Horses, Prime Video's Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Peacock's Day of the Jackal.
In the end, Shōgun claimed the award for Best Drama Series, and Squid Game season 2 was not able to secure the win. Actor Lee Jung-jae and director Hwang Dong-hyuk attended the event but left empty-handed, without a trophy.
Prior to the Golden Globes, Squid Game 2 had already generated a lot of excitement after being nominated even before its official release.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am truly thankful that a show that hasn’t even aired yet was nominated for such a prestigious award. I did my best not to disappoint the fans who loved season 1, and it seems that the Golden Globe recognized that effort first. If you watch season 2, you’ll see that the social-critical messages from season 1 are still very much alive. I believe that if you relate those messages to current real-world events, it will make the experience even more meaningful."
Despite missing out on the Golden Globe, Squid Game 2 took the world by storm, reaching the number one spot globally after its release on December 26, 2023. In its first week, it garnered approximately 500 million viewing hours, becoming Netflix's most-watched content during that time.
In 2022, Squid Game season 1 had already earned nominations for Best TV Drama Series, Best Actor in a TV Drama (Lee Jung-jae), and Best Supporting Actor in a TV Drama (Oh Yeong-su). Oh Yeong-su won the Best Supporting Actor award.
Meanwhile, Squid Game 2 continues the saga of Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who returns to participate in the deadly games for revenge, and his intense showdown with the Front Man (Lee Byung Hun). The third season of Squid Game is expected to be released in the first half of 2024.
