To My Lonely Sister tells the story of Ha Neul, a high school student who devises a plan to help her reclusive sister, No Eul, break free from her isolated world.
During the online press conference for KBS2's Drama Special 2024: To My Lonely Sister on December 10, director Lee Jin A shared her thoughts on the inspiration behind the story. "I was deeply moved by the courage that ordinary people muster for their loved ones," she said. "I’ve always felt it would be meaningful to talk more about topics like social withdrawal and depression. This drama highlights the perspective of families observing and supporting someone with depression, weaving their experiences into a heartfelt narrative."
The cast also spoke about the drama’s message of empathy and healing. Oh Ye Ju, who plays Ha Neul, a teenager navigating life with a reclusive sister and a frequently absent father, shared her perspective: "Through the characters’ evolving emotions and their journeys of growth, I found myself comforted and inspired. It’s truly a beautiful drama."
Kim Kangmin, who portrays Kim Yang, Ha Neul’s classmate with a one-sided crush on her, remarked, "I believe this story will resonate with many people. As an actor, I was drawn to how Kim Yang influences both Ha Neul and her sister, No Eul. Whether through casual remarks or heartfelt conversations, Kim Yang becomes a source of comfort and strength for Ha Neul. I wanted to express that energy and support through my character."
Delving Into the Intricacies of Youth and Depression
Portraying the struggles of adolescence required meticulous attention to detail. Oh Ye Ju described the complexity of her character Ha Neul: "Ha Neul often finds herself bearing the burden of protecting her sister alone. She feels responsible for No Eul but also yearns for freedom and a normal teenage life. This constant inner conflict was a significant focus for me. Preparing for the role also meant studying depression through books and films recommended by the director."
Kim Kangmin highlighted the natural synergy between his character and Ha Neul’s emotional journey: "Kim Yang’s bright personality mirrors my own to some extent. Yet, from the first script reading, I felt a deep empathy for Ha Neul. Even in the most ordinary scenes, her pain resonated with me, and that genuine connection helped me portray my role more authentically."
'To My Lonely Sister' airs tonight at 10:50 PM, promising to deliver a poignant tale of love, courage, and growth.
