On September 11 ET, BLACKPINK's Lisa made her first solo performance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, performing her new songs "New Woman" and "Rockstar" with a crew of dancers.
She also took home the Best K-Pop award for "Rockstar," marking another milestone in her career.
Despite high expectations due to her reputation as BLACKPINK's standout performer, Lisa's performance fell short. Critics and social media users expressed disappointment.
The New York Post harshly criticized her performance, dubbing Lisa a “K-flop” and listing her among the worst performers of the night.
"After getting an introduction by Paris Hilton — who threw in her catchphrase 'That’s hot'— Lisa was absolutely not. This K-pop singer was more of a K-flop when she performed with an army of dancers who couldn’t save her from the pure cheesiness that left us all wondering how she even got the invite."
Billboard also ranked all 16 performances of the night, from "Worst to Best". Lisa was ranked #16, at the very bottom of the list, with Billboard calling it "swing and a miss".
"The BLACKPINK member has proven herself adept at killer choreography and eye-popping visuals in the past, but LISA’s solo turn at the 2024 VMAs felt like a swing and a miss. 'New Woman' could have used a little oomph from Rosalía, and the 'Rockstar' choreography was solid but never head-turning, much less show-stopping."
Locals and non-K-pop fans on social media echoed these sentiments. They criticized her lip-syncing and mediocre performance overall.
