South Korean politician Jang Ye Chan is facing controversy after a fan fiction he wrote years ago has resurfaced.
On February 27, reports revealed 34-year-old People Power Party candidate Jang Ye Chan is the author behind the 2015-2016 web novel 'Gangnam Huata', which follows the story of a doctor who helps patients recover through sexual intercourse. One female patient in the novel is named Lee Ji Eun, the birth name of IU, and the character is unable to sing high notes due to vocal cord nodules.
IU's fans and netizens are criticizing the politician for his fan fiction and sexualization of the singer. The storyline involving the character Lee Ji Eun also includes references to IU's hit song "Good Day", which was released when she was a minor.
Jang Ye Chan further used other female celebrity names in his web novel, including Kim Hye Soo, Jo Yeo Jung, and Krystal of f(x) fame. However, he's publicly dismissed the criticism, stating, "What kind of movie, drama, webtoon, or novel can be made if the problem is the content of a fantasy novel. Are all directors, writers, and actors who make or appear in movies or dramas now social troublemakers? Should writers of webtoons and web novels be criticized for the content of their work? If people die in novels and movies, does that make the author a mass murderer, and if there's a bed scene, does that mean there's a problem with gender sensitivity?"
He concluded, "I'm proud of my history as web novel and webtoon writer, and I'll break new ground against the prejudices of politicians against the arts and culture."
