One store owner sobs out loud in regret he couldn't save more young lives from the Itaewon tragedy

AKP STAFF

A few days have passed since the Itaewon tragedy, and South Korea is still in mourning for all the young lives that have been lost on that horrific night. Many are joining in the national mourning period and commemorating all the lives that were lost.

A day after the incident, one store owner, who opened the doors to his store so the victims could escape the crushing crowd, appeared in the narrow alleyway with a plate of food and candles to mourn for the victims.

He laid out a mat and placed the plate of food where the heartbreaking accident occurred, lit up the candles, and offered up prayers for the deceased. At that moment, one policeman came over to restrict the elderly man from being at the scene of the accident. But the elderly restaurant owner protested, saying, "Don't do this. You need to let me do at least this." He continued to explain, "This is where the accident happened, I should at least offer the kids food before they pass over. Please don't do this. Please leave it."

After a bit of struggle, more policemen came to restrict the man. In the end, the man fell down, wailing and crying out in sorrow for all the young lives that were lost in front of his eyes. The police no longer restricted the man but were seen crying with him.

Many have broken down in tears with the elderly man as they also feel pained from the tragic night. Koreans commented, "The elderly man just wanted to offer up a meal to all the young people who lost their lives, and he also saved so many by allowing people to enter his store. I can't stop crying," "My tears won't stop. As a parent, this pains my heart too; I hope all the young kids who are like our children rest in peace," "I just played the video without thinking now I am crying so hard on the train. The store owner is so warm-hearted, and I am so sad for all the lives that were lost," and "It's sadder to see the elderly man and the police crying together."

i feel like of course you understand the police; they can't be blamed here - the scene is part of an investigation. but i hope they do leave the offerings there... this poor man... i also hope he thinks more that he did his best and that he did help others, rather than hurts too much over those he couldn't. at the end of the day, you can't help everyone. in any case, to bear witness to such a tragedy would leave a lot of scars. RIP to all who died.

The sad part about this is that he will be reminded everyday of the tragedy since his store is in Itaewon. So many things will change for the people who had witnessed this tragedy and especially those who had survived it. They will always be plagued with what ifs, I hope the government help them get debriefing or therapy at least.
