Hwang Ha Na, who was sent to jail on charges of drug use, was released from prison.
On October 24, the monthly magazine Women's Chosun published an interview with Hwang Ha Na and her father. Hwang Ha Na was sentenced to one year in prison and two years of probation in 2015 for habitually taking methamphetamine with her acquaintances, including her ex-boyfriend, singer Park Yoo Chun. Hwang Ha Na was once again charged with drug use in 2020, which was during probation, and was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison. Hwang Ha Na was released from prison after finishing her sentencing and now living in a camping car in Jeju island with her grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer's, her father, and her stepmother.
Hwang Ha Na's father, Hwang Jae Pil, explained, "I thought it would be better to start out small since the start is going to be difficult. I thought it would be good to live in a small space with one another for a month. The most dangerous moment for a drug addict is that one instant moment. To be honest, I still think she (Hwang Ha Na) can make a mistake. This is an illness and has nothing to do with her own will. If she spends two years without any drugs, such as sleeping pills or sleep-inducing drugs like cold medicine, there is a possibility she can get over drugs. So this is our homework for the next two years."
Hwang Ha Na shared about when she first started drugs and explained, "Everyone knew about it (drugs) if you were an international student in the US, I thought it was okay to do it. I tried drugs once and I started making friends who were drug users. I don't know if people gathered around me because I already did it. But anyone who did drugs came and we just ended up doing drugs altogether. I was scared that I would get caught one day but I was still administering it (drugs). There is just two end to drugs - either suicide or jail."
Just as she explained, Hwang Ha Na was sentenced to prison for taking drugs during her probation period. Regarding this, she explained, "I am really confident that I won't do it again now. My teeth are all broken that need to be fixed and my face and skin are too damaged. MY calf is filled with meth bugs. This is the first time I knew that I have so many scars." Heavy meth users are known to have sores, scratches, scabs, and scars on their skin. These injuries are commonly caused by meth users ripping at their skin due to hallucinations that there are bugs under their skin.
Hwang Ha Na received public attention when there were rumors that she was getting married to Park Yoo Chun. However, she explained, "When that article about me with that man was first released, I almost fainted from crying so much. I didn't want to become famous through an article like that. I also wasn't thinking about getting married."
She added, "I wasn't engaged to him so I didn't break up any engagement. After the article about being engaged was released, that's when I met his parents but I wasn't planning anything," denying that she was "Park Yoo Chun's fiancé."
Hwang Ha Na continued to share, "Then I got addicted to the attention. I didn't know why people said I was an attention seeker but it's true I am an attention seeker."
Regarding being the granddaughter of Namyang Dairy, Hwang Ha Na explained, "I only found out about my mom's side of the family when I was in middle school. My friends told me. I think I grew up ordinarily."
Hwang Ha Na is known to be the granddaughter of the founder of Namyang Dairy, and Namyang Dairy has cut ties with Hwang Ha Na and drew the line after being negatively affected by her drug scandal. She said, "I was a little upset at first, but I understand. They don't need to go through another controversy because of me."
Currently, Hwang Ha Na is publishing a webtoon titled '2045 (Any Star DNA)' on the Naver Webtoon Challenge Comics website with her father. Hwang Jae Pil said, "Webtoons are also a communication channel for my daughter and me. It becomes nagging when you tell your child, who is already an adult, to do this and that. To me, Han Ji Ah (webtoon character) is Ha Na. There are many times I send a message to Ha Na through Han Ji Ah."
Hwang Ha Na concluded by saying, "(During my prison time) I self-reflected for the first time. I changed a lot. I regret the time when I first used drugs. My life became messed up starting from that time. I am really not going to do drugs."
It really sounds like her father is doing everything in his power to help her get better, I just hope it really is all genuine and not just media play.
