American actress Jamie Lee Curtis making actor Lee Seo Jin hold her bag at the '94th Academy Awards' sparked debate over underlying racism.
On the May 29th episode of tvN's reality series 'Youn's Unexpected Journey', Lee Seo Jin was seen accompanying actress Youn Yeo Jung as a temporary manager for her attendance at the '94th Academy Awards'.
During the episode, Lee Seo Jin was seen holding someone's purse at the Awards ceremony. Turns out the bag belonged to American actress Jamie Lee Curtis and the actress told Lee Seo Jin to hold her bag for her while she posed for pictures. After she was done with the photoshoots, she curtly thanked him and took her bag back.
Shortly after the episode aired, the Korean netizens were divided over if the American actress was being rude and showed underlying racism.
Some said if it was rude Lee Seo Jin would have said no to her in the face while others said it was rude to make someone hold her bag when they both don't know each other. Many further claimed that this shows an apparent microaggression or underlying racism.
Meanwhile, 'Youn's Unexpected Journey' accompanies veteran actress Youn Yeo Jung on her trip to Los Angeles, California, for her attendance at the 94th Academy Awards as a presenter.
I see the word "microaggression" and I immediately know that I can't take this article seriously. Please, treat us like people with actual intelligence. I can already tell that this is a non-issue being painted into a racist one, simply because people are being presumptuous. I've helped strangers before, and strangers have helped me before. It's not a big deal, so don't make it one.
