On December 24th, the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) released a statement criticizing that the new mandatory enlistment postponement law is discriminatory.
The KMCA stated the only individuals who will be eligible for the new law involving the 'Merit Awardees in the Field of Popular Culture and Arts' are BTS members. The association also pointed out that the future K-Pop idols who come after BTS will have to achieve much more than BTS in order to be considered for the Presidential Order of Cultural Merit and receive the benefits of the new enlistment postponement law.
However, Korean netizens have different opinions about the matter. Many netizens have gathered to an online community to share their argument and opinions of only BTS being able to receive the benefits of the new military postponement law.
Netizens have commented, "Of course, other K-Pop stars should make achievements like BTS to get those benefits. Why are they making a fuss over just a postponement?" "What's the issue, the rest of the celebrities should work hard to get the Cultural Merit," "The Ministry of National Defense said they don't want this law to be excessively used, I think it's fair that the scope of this law is that they need a Presidential Order of Cultural Merit," "This is only a postponement. It's not like BTS was exempt from the military," "I think this new law is fair, you can't just give anyone postponement because they say they're world popular," "Of course, BTS should get the benefits considering how much they achieved, why are they having issues with this?" and "They should leave the boys alone because they said they will serve in the military, it's not like they were exempted."
it's honestly just funny seeing people getting riled up about a simple postponement 😂 meanwhile, athletes and other professions can get an actual exemption from the military and... no one cares. this whole thing really shows that for many, BTS and their success/accomplishments is/are a threat.
