Here are the viewership ratings of Lunar New Year special variety programs aired on February 5-6 via Korea's 3 major broadcasting stations - KBS, MBC, and SBS.
A brand new Lunar New Year pilot program on KBS2 titled 'My Boss's Ears Are Donkey Ears' achieved the highest viewership ratings of all holiday variety broadcasts aired on Monday and Tuesday, with an average rating of 3.0% during Part 1, and an average rating of 8.1% during Part 2 (Nielsen Korea).
Within the same time slot, MBC chose to air its signature Lunar New Year holiday special - the '2019 Idol Star Athletics Championship' - celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. However, Parts 1 & 2 of this year's 'ISAC' recorded unsatisfactory viewership ratings with 4.3% during Part 1 and 6.1% during Part 2.
SBS also aired a new pilot variety program during this time slot titled 'Family Nowadays: Niece Is Enough' - featuring celebrities who have no kids of their own, but still face "parenting" challenges through their nieces and nephews. This program recorded an average viewership rating of 4.4% during Part 1, and 5.8% during Part 2.
Another new MBC program which aired as a first-time, pilot broadcast from February 4-5, 'Rewriting The Charts Show: Today's #1 Is?', recorded an average viewership rating of 6.4% during the February 5 broadcast, seeing similar results to MBC's 'ISAC'. On this unique singing competition show, new and trendy artists from today's generation remade some of Korea's oldie hits including Won Mi Yeon, Shim Shin, Shin Hae Chul, and more.
MBC's 'Help Me, Homes!', which also aired from February 4-5, recorded an average viewership rating of 4.5% during Part 1 and 5.6% during Part 2.
During the same time slot as 'Help Me, Homes!' on MBC, SBS aired the final two episodes of Mon-Tues drama 'My Strange Hero' as schedules. The last two episodes recorded average viewership ratings of 4.4% and 5.1% respectively.
Did you catch any of the above Lunar New Year special programs?
People get tired of watching the same stuff year-after-year. It really shouldn't be surprising that the new programs fared better than the old ones. That, coupled with the fact that ratings are down in general for all shows. People have a lot more choices now.
