BoA – CAMO
Track List:
1. CAMO
BoA has released another single, "CAMO," and the teasers certainly looked dynamic. I've followed her career for awhile, and anything she does usually piques my interest. This is just a single, with a whopping one song, and no instrumental.
The first thing you notice is that this tune sounds a lot like "The Shadow." A lot. That alone doesn't make it bad -- I rather like the aforementioned song. And it's not bad at all.
We've been getting little teases here and there, scattered singles, of which this is one. Which really just whets my appetite for more. We've got all the BoA hallmarks here: her almost sex-kitten vocals, a penchant for drama even in the song itself, and that R&B dance aesthetic for which she's best known.
I like the direction she's taken since 2015's 'Kiss My Lips.' She's teamed up with the likes of Beenzino and Beatburger, and produced some quality singles in collaboration and alone. Her work seems grounded in electronic sounds, drifting on the edges of EDM, and that's just fine by me. This particular single has BoA written all over it, plus it has a fierceness to it that makes it extra special in my book.
MV REVIEW
Okay, I'm still not sure what I watched. But whatever it was, it was dynamic, full of bright, bold colors, and an absolute visual treat. There are scenes that make you think she might be a cyborg, dancing, ancient ivy-choked ruins, and just all sorts of explosions of light and color that make this MV pop.
I wasn't too much a fan of the red color scheme. That seemed to be the dominant theme for the first half of the video, and they kept returning to it. Wasn't too much of a fan of a static BoA, either. But it wasn't long before dance moves came and boosted my flagging attention.
But as I said, the dancing got my attention. All the other special effects before that time were window dressing (although the tattoos multiplying and making their way up a leg were interesting all by themselves). She hasn't really upped her game as far as dancing goes, but she doesn't need to. What moves she does have, she does well.
It almost makes you think they shot several things and then shoehorned them in here to make it all fit. Like they couldn't decide on one concept so they shoveled several of them into a 3:36 running time. But this time around, it's not a bad thing. because it was all very seamless and had some fantastic special effects. Does this get my seal of approval? Most enthusiastically yes.
