Though he's already released an official apology through YG Entertainment, this is the first time the actor personally spoke publicly about the matter. He made his first appearance since the controversy at the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) for his film 'Master' on May 3 and addressed the issue head on.
Kang Dong Won stated, "Early this year, there was a controversy about my grandfather. I want to apologize for this in a public space. There haven't been opportunities or spaces for me to do so. With this chance, I want to apologize once again. I will continue to study and reflect on the truth of this embarrassing history. I'm sorry for speaking on a personal issue like this."
As previously reported, Kang Dong Won is known to be the great-grandson of Chinilpa- a group of Koreans who were pro-Japanese and collaborated with Japan during the Japanese occupation of Korea.
