A netizen has made known his or her suspicions through an online community that Hyoyeon may have copied Ariana Grande's style in her recent solo promotions for "Mystery" - and the person is not alone because lots of netizens after reading the post were in accordance.

The netizen first pointed out that Ariana Grande was known for her half-up ponytail, and then for her "Side to Side" MV released on August 29, she pierced a hole through her baseball cap and pulled that ponytail through it.  The hairstyle is what Hyoyeon has been sporting for "Mystery."

On top of that, the netizen stated Hyoyeon did not copy only the hair but also the outfit and general style. In the picture below, Ariana Grande is the woman standing on the left. She's wearing a 2-piece white outfit with a sheer, long coat over it.  Still cuts from Hyoyeon's MV show her in similar attire and purple lighting. The coat color is different, but the oversized style of the outerwear topped with a midriff-baring top and loose training pants are similar.

The netizen added that Hyoyeon is pulling off the look on her music show performances and that "Side to Side" is a single that Ariana Grande is promoting even now. The netizen concluded, "Even in the past, there were a lot of suspicions that Girls' Generation's stage outfits were plagiarisms, but the only, unconvincing feedback was that those were 'hommages,' and then, without even self-reflecting, they again steal the styles of overseas singers, which is a bit annoying and disgraceful.  Also, I feel like they're pushing the oversized coat, bustier, and wide pants as the main outfit for her 'Side to Side' promotions, so geez...  In conclusion, I I view this as clear plagiarism because they copied not only the hair but also the image as is from the representative main image of Ariana's single 'Side to Side.'  Because in entertainment, an image soon becomes a product."

Netizens mostly agreed, stating, "Hul... shock.. I just watched Ariana's MV a few days ago and then Hyoyeon's MV but had not thought they were similar at all [until now]. But Hyoyeon really got a lot prettier," "The hair was an already existing style, but still, the clothes and atmosphere are really similar.." "The motif looks copied, but I don't know about disgraceful," "It's too similar," "I don't think the hair really matters, but the clothes... are too similar," "How many times did Girls' Generation plagiarize their outfits.." "It's too similar for anyone to deny it," "It's the same to the point it looks like they just brought the clothes and stole them..." and more.
