Though the girls are drawing much positive interest, there seems to be some negative reaction toward them as well. This negative reaction stems mainly from the speculation that Gugudan seem to be using more popular, established artists' names in the media as a way to gain popularity and attention.
A netizen shared a capture from a Korean search engine to back this speculation, and the capture shows the article links that generate when you search the term 'Gugudan' with 'EXO.' Some of the article titles read, "'V' app: Gugudan places first, surpasses EXO in album sales,' 'Gugudan overcomes BTS, TWICE, and EXO to place 1st on Hanteo Charts,' 'The Kim Se Jung Effect? Gugudan beats EXO and places 1st in albums sales,' and more with similar titles.
Unsurprisingly, many were outraged and in disbelief at these claims. Netizens left snarky comments that read, "So that means they must have sold over 1,000,000 album copies right after they debuted...?" "What kind of BS is this. They beat EXO? I've never heard of them though? Who is this Gugudan?" "Geez this media play...so pathetic lolololol it's only been two or three weeks since their album was released and they're throwing a fit because they were pushed out once on real-time charts lolololol we're sick and tired of your media play~! If you type EXO on Naver that's the article that pops up~!" "The agency can't do their job right for sh*t...it's best to just ignore them," "I want to memorize the multiplication table," and more.
