A heartwarming story of understanding and kindness has appeared despite the current dire medical situation in South Korea.
In the midst of the MERS situation, South Korean businesses have seen declines in sales and profits. 58-year-old "Ms. Kim." who resides in Kyungido. was certainly no exception to this downward trend and struggled to make a living through these financial hardships.
However, her landlord made a choice that truly demonstrates the kind potential of humanity. In a text message, the landlord told Ms. Kim, "It's a difficult time now, right? If we hold out just a bit, things will return back to normal. Stay strong and have a great day. I want to alleviate some of your difficulties from MERS, so this month we'll just skip the rent."
At first, Ms. Kim had no idea what her landlord was saying. After a phone call with her landlord, however, she finally realized that her landlord was refusing to collect the monthly rent of 1,600,000 WON (about $1430 USD) in light of her struggling business. She has gratefully acknowledged the impact this has on her struggling finances, saying, "Even from the beginning, the economy was not doing so well. Since MERS, however, the number of customers decreased by 50%, and this month I thought that I should at least pay my staff's salaries."
Apparently this isn't the first instance of this landlord's goodwill either. "For the past 5 years, my landlord hasn't raised the rent once, and I have so much gratitude that I don't know what to do. Even in such a bad situation the consideration my landlord has given me gives me strength," she said of her landlord's past warmhearted actions.
To make up for the loss of one month's rent, the landlord is working himself by driving a taxi. However, the landlord could only comment on others' hardships. "As I go around today, I hear a lot of stories about the difficulties businesses face today," the landlord said. "However, if a stronger will appears later, things will change."
