The incident occurred earlier today on March 5 when Lippert was attending a breakfast function at the Sejong Cultural Institute. Lippert was scheduled to give a lecture during the event when Kim attacked him with a razor. Kim was quickly tackled to the floor by surrounding witnesses and security guards.
Reports say Lippert suffered a four-inch long and one-inch deep gash across the right side of his face and a cut on his left hand. Lippert was quickly escorted to the Yonsei Severance Hospital, where he underwent a 3-hour-long surgery. He is expected to be hospitalized for 3-4 days.
Meanwhile, Kim will be investigated by the police. Currently, we know that Kim is an activist with pro-North Korea and anti-U.S. views. He is against U.S.'s military presence in Korea and believes the two Koreas should be reunified.
Yonhap News reports that Kim visited North Korea six times in 2006 and 2007 and even tried to establish a memorial to the late Kim Jong Il in Seoul in 2011. In 2007, Kim attempted to burn himself as a protest outside of the Blue House (president's office and residence) and, in 2010, Kim was given a two-year suspended prison sentence for throwing pieces of concrete at the Japanese ambassador.
