You may have noticed the trend of solo debuts from idol groups this year, but there's another 2015 trend going on. More and more artists are choosing to have their debut or comeback performances 'on the street' rather than on music shows.
As reported earlier, Girl's Day's Minah is planning to have her first solo showcase on the streets of Seoul outside Myeongdong Arts Theatre. Cube Entertainment's upcoming girl group CLC had outdoor performances every week for seven months before their debut in the Hongdae area to get their name out.
On March 5, Eric Nam revealed his new song "I'm Okay" through his comeback performance on the streets of Hongdae. Even boy group JJCC is performing on the streets in Hongdae every Saturday this month to celebrate their one year anniversary since their debut. They will be performing released songs as well as new songs that haven't been released yet.
The reasons for performing outdoors vary.
Minah's company Dream Tea Entertainment said, "The reason is to show that we are coming back cautiously." Minah is known to have practiced on the streets of Hongdae before her debut with Girl's Day, and she has nostalgic memories there.
JJCC's reason was to "become more in tune with and communicate better with fans."
Other possible reasons could be that performing on the streets is a different outlet to promote a song or group, outside of the online world. Another reason is said to be that outdoor performances give a fresher image (compared to performances on music shows).
Cube Entertainment said, "[The success of] music content released online depends heavily on fandoms. There is an overflowing of online content, so the only new way to get in contact with the public is through street performances."
