Following the controversy surrounding suspicions of JYP Entertainment bringing in their own trainee for SBS's 'K-Pop Star', the show has been met with another round of suspicions in regards to a contestant Yang Hyun Suk passed to the second round. Netizens sepculated that contestant Kim Chul Yeon and Yang Hyun Suk had already been familiar with one another before the program. Kim appeared on 'K-Pop star' and introduced himself as a beatboxing guitarist from a club in Hongdae called 'Moon Night'. Yang Hyun Suk expressed interest in his background, stating, "'Moon Night' was a popular gathering for good dancers, and has produced dance singers like Lee Juno, Kang Won Rae, DJ Koo, J.Y. Park, and me." Upon hearing Kim's own remake of Seo Taiji and Boys' "Come Back Home" and seeing his break dance performance, Yang Hyun Suk passed him to the next round, stating, "You're still lacking as a singer, but you were the most interesting out of all of the other contestants. Your dance was also exceptional and fun." J.Y. Park, on the other hand, disagreed, stating, "He gave a good overall picture but I'm not interested." Choosing to drop him, he said, "I want to just go with how I feel." Yang Hyun Suk expressed his regret over his co-judge's decision stating, "He's from 'Moon Night' but you still disqualify him." Kim's fate then rested in BoA's decision, who also showed disinterest in the contestant. She began, "Basically, you're inexperienced in the way you finish off your notes and your singing is weak." Yang Hyun Suk then nodded his head in BoA's direction and requested, "Qualify him, please," leading BoA to eventually say, "I'll place my trust in Yang CEO and qualify you." The controversy came after netizens discovered that Kim had appeared on a cable program as 2NE1's Dara's guitar teacher. Other netizens also found that Kim had also released an album and had been promoting in the indie music industry. Netizens commented, "It seems K-Pop Star is distorting things again," "There's no rule that Dara's guitar teacher or musicians can compete on the show, but viewers that don't know about background information like this will just think they're watching a show that takes amateurs and helps them grow," and "Letting a contestant, whom a judge already knew, pass on the insistence of that judge is bordering on distortion, and unfair." PD Park Sung Hoon spoke with reporters regarding the issue on December 15th and denied the accusations, stating, "Although Kim has experience teaching Dara the guitar, the matter was handled individually on her own. When he confessed about this at the recording of the first episode, Yang Hyun Suk was surprised himself, asking who did he teach. Kim and YG Entertainment are completely unrelated."
