The Seoul Western District Court has now ordered the formal arrest of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. The order took place shortly after Yoon Suk Yeol's warrant hearing, and the impeached president will now be moved to solitary confinement in the Seoul Detention Center.
Seoul Western District Court Chief Judge Cha Eun-kyung issued an arrest warrant for President Yoon due to concerns about the possible destruction of evidence, after a riot broke out at the courthouse among Yoon's supporters.
Following his arrest, President Yoon will now be moved to a solitary unit designated for pretrial detainees. While he will be subject to the same general regulations as other detainees, he will also be under the protection of the Presidential Security Service.
Yoon may now be held in the detention center for up to 20 days, while the investigation into the charges brought against him continues.
This marks the first time in South Korea’s history that a sitting president has been arrested.
