The Itaewon tragedy has caused devastation to South Korea and sadness globally as the death count is reaching 154.
It has been two and a half days since the tragedy, and the South Korean government has begun investigating the cause of the horrific accident.
The police were able to obtain surveillance footage and other videos on social media showing the scene of the accident, revealing the crowd in the back pushing forward.
Additionally, there are suspicions that there was a group of people who initiated the push. One social media video shows one individual raising his hand over his head and signaling the crowd to push forward. Shortly after, the crowd is seen pushing forward as a group.
In another video, the crowd is also shouting as a group, "Let's go out" and "Move down." One witness explained to the news media outlet, "I don't know who started it, but everyone started pushing and shouting 'Push, push.' They started pushing forward all together."
On various online communities, the people who were at the scene of the incident gave a similar account explaining, "I heard people screaming 'Push, push' and then suddenly a group of guys pushed all at the same time," and "there was a group of 5 to 6 people who kept pushing people full strength and passing by here and there."
The police immediately started an investigation after the incident area was cleared to find the cause of the incident. They have collected surveillance footage from nearby stores and streets along with videos from social media to reconstruct the scene.
Unfortunately you can not expect everyone in such a big crowd of people (especially people who are out to party/drink probably) to completely behave as they should. Had authorities been there as well as several ambulance, with some decent crowd control, it could have been avoided. It's so obvious that they're trying to project the publics anger on individuals rather than authorities.
