According to a November 28 exclusive report by SBS, this past March, a 31-year-old woman identified by her surname Lee, a third year medical school student, was mercilessly beaten by a fellow male student whom she was dating.
The male student, identified as 'A', had called her very late into the night and cursed her out for the attitude she had given him for calling her so late. 'A' was so angry that he even visited Lee's home and slapped her cheeks over 200 times and kicked her. 'A's horrific violence towards Lee didn't end there. He had even strangled her and spat in her face. Lee, who had continued to suffer abuse from 'A', managed to record the incident and 'A' was even revealed to have uttered, "It feels great knowing that I can finally kill you." Over four and a half hours later, after 'A' was finally done beating Lee, she had two broken ribs.

As soon as the sun rose, Lee reported 'A' to the police while he was asleep and they arrived at Lee's home using a location tracing device.
'A' claimed that Lee was acting the whole time and insisted that he was the one that was hurt. Prosecution handed 'A' over to the courts and requested two years of imprisonment; however, during the first trial, the courts ruled that because 'A' might be expelled from medical school if he received a punishment more severe than probation, they simply fined him 12 million KRW (~$10,345 USD) instead.
Hence, Lee is now in an awkward situation where she has to continue facing 'A' at school. Lee, having developed an intense anxiety disorder after the incident, requested for the school to adjust her schedule so that she won't come across 'A' in class. However, the school denied her request stating that they will not intervene in the two's personal relationship until the results for the third trial is revealed.
Netizens commented, "They worry about the criminal's life while that woman has to live shuddering from unease ?? Did such a verdict result from his parents pulling strings?" and, "Our country is a good country... There must be a lot of bastards who go with money to do sexual assault... If they have some money and go to med school, they must be able to pick any women on the streets and sexually assault them... What a great country... ?.? Do you even need to study to become a judge? It's very suspicious..."
